In the first ， Ash and Pikachu initially dislike each other. However, they are attacked by a flock of Spearow, who injure Pikachu, and Ash fails to escape on the bicycle he steals from Misty. Left with no other choice, Ash stands in front of Pikachu and eggs the Spearow on to attack him instead, all while begging Pikachu to get in a Pokéball so that it will be safe. (Note that he doesn’t just forcibly recall Pikachu, because Pikachu dislikes Pokéballs; he could do that, but instead he asks it to get in a ball on its own terms.)
Pikachu is moved by his selfless effort to protect it, and it uses the last of its strength to jump onto Ash’s shoulder and fire a Thundershock at the flock of Spearow, saving both of them. Ever since then, they have trusted each other as partners and friends.
